Acorn House is a 32-child nursery in a converted vicarage with a garden that does most of the teaching. Muddy knees are a feature, naps are sacred, and every child is picked up by someone who can tell you one specific thing that happened today.
Our day
Small children don't read clocks; they read rhythms. Ours goes like this, gently, every day.
Porridge, quiet corners and a lap to sit on for the ones who need a slow start. Drop-off tears (yours included) are normal and handled kindly.
Out in almost all weather — the mud kitchen, the digging patch, the beloved hose. Waterproofs live here; spare socks are our love language.
Cooked on site, eaten together, followed by the nap that parents ask us to bottle. Non-nappers get quiet books and the good cushions.
Paint, blocks, glitter with supervision and regret, stories in the reading den. By pickup there's something crumpled and precious in every bag.

Grouped by age, mixed in the garden — the older ones are magnificent, self-appointed tour guides.

Practical things
Ofsted-registered, all staff paediatric-first-aid trained, allergies handled with a whole-kitchen plan rather than a hopeful label. The daily photo update goes out at four — one photo, one sentence, no app that gamifies your child.
Funded hours accepted, invoices readable, and the waiting list is honest: we'll tell you the real likely start date, not the optimistic one.
Parents
Pickup report, verbatim: 'Ada led a snail funeral, gave a speech, then ate three helpings of pasta.' That's when we knew this was the place.
Our son's key worker noticed his hearing thing before we did, said it gently, and gave us the words for the GP. Nine-year tenure is not a marketing stat, it's this.
She cried at drop-off for two weeks. Now she cries at pickup because she doesn't want to leave. We are billing them for our feelings.
Visit
Visits run mid-morning on purpose — you'll see the garden in full use, not a tidied version. Bring the child; the tour guides insist.
