A quarterly of slow journalism

Four issues a year. Nothing breaking.

Column is a printed journal of long pieces that took as long as they needed — reported for months, edited for weeks, and set in type meant for chairs, not feeds. No ads, no algorithm, no notifications. Paper doesn't ping.

The idea

News ages. Writing shouldn't.

Every piece in Column is commissioned with one question: will this still be worth reading in five years? It kills topical hot takes at the pitch stage and leaves the stories that actually happen slowly — a decade of one harbour town, the afterlife of a factory, three years inside a failing choir.

Twelve pieces an issue. A reader wrote that finishing one 'feels like standing up after a good meal'. We printed that on the subscription cards.

The issues

The shelf so far.

Every issue is themed loosely and edited tightly. Back issues remain in print until they sell out, which they politely keep doing.

Subscriber letters

From the postbag

I read Issue 13 over five evenings with a pencil, like a student. I am a plumber. Your harbour piece is the best thing I've read in a decade.
K., RotterdamSubscriber, year two
My phone screen time dropped forty minutes the week each issue arrives. My wife says to make it weekly. Please do not — the scarcity is the medicine.
D., AarhusThe Year
Cancelled once during a broke patch. You wrote back 'the issues will wait'. Resubscribed as Patron the month things turned. The issues had waited.

The Footnote

One email a month, mostly marginalia.

The desk

Letters welcome. Actual letters, ideally.

Pitches: one paragraph, no clippings, tell us why it'll matter in five years. Everything gets read; the good ones get argued about at Thursday lunch.
