An evening bathhouse · Reykjavík
Stillwater opens at five and closes at midnight — a bathhouse for the end of the day, not the middle of it. Hot water, cold air, candlelight, and a firm house rule about phones, which is that there aren't any.
The evening
You can come for one soak. But the house is built around the full evening, which goes like this.
Robe, locker, and the corridor where the lights step down with every metre. By the last door your shoulders have already started without you.
Hot pool, sauna, the cold plunge you'll swear at, repeat. Three rounds is where most people stop counting, which is the point of the rounds.
If you've booked hands: warm oil, hot stones, forty-five minutes during which nothing is your responsibility.
The outdoor water under the open sky, steam rising into the dark. People whisper out here without being asked to.
Rituals
All bookings include robe, towels, and as long as you like in the pools until midnight.
€38 any evening
The full circuit and every pool, at your own pace, until the candles are put out.
€96 soak + hands
The evening plus forty-five minutes of hot-stone massage in the quiet rooms.
€150 for two, Sundays
A private hour in the small pool before opening, then the house as normal — the quietest ninety minutes we sell.
House facts
Nothing good happens fast in hot water.
The house
There are no overhead lights in Stillwater — only candles, low lamps and whatever the sky is doing through the glass roof of the last pool. Evening light is kinder, and people unclench in it.
The stones for the ritual rooms are basalt from the coast, warmed slowly through the afternoon in time for the first booking at six.
The hands
The ritual is hot stones and slow hands and a room where the only sound is water somewhere else. Our therapists are trained to read shoulders, not to chat.
Book it for the middle of your evening — a soak before, the last pool after. That order isn't a suggestion so much as a recipe.
Whispered back
I came in rehearsing an argument from work. Somewhere in the second round of sauna I lost my place in it, and by the last pool I'd lost the argument entirely. Best €38 of the winter.
The no-phones rule sounded precious until I watched an entire pool of strangers watch the snow come down in total silence. Precious is fine, actually.
The therapist said eleven words in forty-five minutes and every one was 'breathe'. Ten out of ten.
Book
Evenings only, five to midnight. Ritual slots are the scarce thing — book those first and build the soak around them.
Visitors pick a date and time here, then leave their details.
The bathhouse
Ten minutes from the centre, on the water side. If the lantern is lit, the pools are warm.
