The anatomy
Three jobs, one disc.
Everything the object does, it does without moving parts.

Lift
A pressed-cork face raises the cup four millimetres off the wood — high enough to matter, low enough to disappear.

Insulate
Cork holds a surprising amount of nothing. The heat stays in the mug and out of the table it sits on.

Grip
The face is sanded, never sealed — cups stay put on it, and it stays put on the table. Physics, not adhesive.
The making
Pressed, turned, sanded.
The cork arrives as granulate and leaves as a disc — pressed in a mould we machined ourselves, bonded to a walnut core, and sanded by hand until the face reads like paper. Ninety days of prototypes taught us what to leave out.
